Design vs. Business
The main goal of the majority of architects is to design. Due to this strong desire to create, architects have become notoriously bad at the business aspects of the profession. This would lead you to assume that bad at design = good at business…That doesn’t seem to be the case. I have had the privilege to work at different types of firms including, high design firms, corporate firms, and even small firms without a “high design standard”. All of these firms are very successful businesses. Since the goal is to create good architecture I have to say that the only successful architecture business is the high design firm. If the main goal is to design and make money why does that work for some and not for others? If you’re going to create less than stellar designs and whore yourself to your clients WHY NOT GET PAID? Otherwise, you have no excuses to not be creating good design.
